‘Burger and Dog’ Series
An old-fashioned burger and new found dog
Have you driven home from work or somewhere you frequent and gotten lost in thoughts? Then somehow you are pulling into your drive but can’t remember negotiating some of the turns on your route. It’s like you’re navigating on autopilot.
Burgers are like that for me, like a cozy swing on a porch or a comfortable well-worn shoe. They’re a core color fiber in the fabric of my culinary heritage. They’re a frequent flyer on our family dinner menu. Growing up burgers were a requested fare for celebrations, especially birthday dinners. I love an old-fashioned hamburger with an essential slice of fresh tomato. A good burger also begs a slice of raw pungent onion, melty cheese and a crisp leaf of lettuce. Then there’s the burger sauce. Yeah you can put mustard, ketchup, and mayo but why not jazz it up a little. Try some simple burger dressings and sauce up your sandwich.
We’ll also do a couple of specialty dogs. First, there’s my all-time favorite Chili Cheese Dog with a homemade no-bean chili. Check out all the other ways you can use this ‘mild with a back heat kick’ chili. Then I’ll share a new found Southern style hot dog discovered when I lived in Atlanta, Georgia, the Slaw and Pepper Dog.
Add these burgers and dogs to your picnics and birthday celebrations this summer.
