OJ’s chili cheese dog is the hook that won’t let go
Back in the day (early 70’s) I used to grab a Chili Cheese Dog with diced raw onion at Orange Julius on my work break. I altered, sewed and mended ladies clothes in the Alterations department of ZCMI (Zion’s Cooperative Mercantile Institute). At the time ZCMI anchored the Cottonwood Mall in Salt Lake City. OJ’s no bean chili was spicy, the cheddar cheese melty and the onion raw and crispy. My favorite dog, I make my own homemade no bean chili and serve it with a couple Hebrew Nationals on a sub roll. A measly hot dog bun isn’t man enough for this double dog and chili combo.
But this chili keeps on giving long after you do chili cheese dogs. Squirrel away some for Summer Chili Salad, Chili Cheese Dip with Scoop Fritos, Baked Potato Bar, Chili Joes, Cowboy Burgers and Chili on Rice. See the ‘Information’ section below for more about these easy chili dishes.
2011 AniversaRecipe – Grilled Ham and Cheddar on Wheat
Recipe: Chili Cheese Dog
Prep Time: 15 Minutes | Cook Time: 1 Hour 20 Minutes | Yield: 10 Cups Chili, 4 Chili Dogs | Level: Easy
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 medium onions, diced
- 2 jalapenos, finely chopped
- 8 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 3 lbs lean ground beef
- 4 Tbsp chili powder
- 1 Tbsp cumin
- 1 1/2 tsp Herb de Provence
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 28-ounce can diced tomatoes
- 1 6-ounce can tomato paste
- 2 cups chicken broth
- salt and pepper to taste
- 4 sub rolls
- 8 Hebrew National hot dogs
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup diced onion
1 Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium high heat. Add onions, jalapenos and garlic. Sauté until onions are translucent but have not begun to brown, about 7-9 minutes.
2 Add ground beef and brown, breaking up meat with the back of a spoon to fine crumble, about 7-9 minutes. If needed, remove excess grease.
3 In the meantime, combine chili powder, cumin, Herb de Provence, oregano, and flour in a small bowl. Once meat has browned, stir in spice mixture and cook for about 2 minutes.
4 Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste and chicken broth. Bring to a boil then reduce and simmer for 1 hour while the flavors meld and the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Chili Cheese Dogs
5 Cook the hot dogs in boiling water or the microwave according to package directions.
6 Slice open each sub roll lengthwise but not all the way through so there is a hinge.
7 Place two hot dogs on each bun, spoon over some chili, sprinkle with cheese and dot with raw onions.
Increase the jalapenos to ramp up the heat. This chili is mild but has a little back heat. The spiciness may be increased by adding more chili
This chili freezes well in small, medium or large packages. It makes a good one-person meal on a bun.
Summer Chili Salad – On individual plates, place a bed of tortilla chips, add a layer of chopped lettuce, some diced tomatoes, diced onions and a hand full of kidney or black beans. Spoon on a scoop or two of warm chili and top with grated cheese. Serve with ranch dressing and salsa or Pico de Gallo. I love this salad all year round.
Chili Cheese Dip with Scoop Fritos – Place a brick of softened cream cheese on a small serving plate. Heat 1 cup of chili in the microwave. Pour over cream cheese allowing it to spill over the brick of cheese. Garnish with chopped cilantro or parsley. Serve with a bowl of scoop shaped Fritos. This is an easy appetizer to have on hand for a last minute event or party.
Baked Potato Bar – Bake some medium to large Russet potatoes. Split and serve with chili, grated cheese, diced green onions and sour cream. Offer other accompaniments desired such as kidney or black beans, diced tomatoes, chopped green peppers and pickled jalapenos. This one dish meal is simple if the chili just needs to be defrosted in the microwave.
Chili Joes – Spoon chili on a hamburger bun or roll. Add cheese and diced onion as desired. A tweak on Sloppy Joes for those who prefer chili and cumin flavors.
Chili on Rice – Serve chili over a bed of white or brown rice. Top with grated cheese and diced onion. Use a rice cooker to make rice and defrost some no bean chili for an easy supper.
- Exchange ground beef for ground turkey or chicken.
- Exchange Herb de Provence for 1 teaspoon dried basil and 1/2 teaspoon thyme.
- Exchange Hebrew Nationals for hot dogs desired.
