How to Roll Maki-zushi – Demo and Tasting Class

This class is designed for students who already know how to make sushi rice. I recommend taking the Beginning Sushi Class first but it’s not required.
How to:

  • Roll Maki-zushi, both Futomaki and Hosomaki, such as California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Shrimp and Cucumber Roll
  • Use a variety of fish, seafood and vegetables including sashimi
  • Roll Uramaki-sushi such as Smoked Salmon Roll and Crab with Chives
  • Cook Misoshiru including information about miso paste and dashi
  • Suggestions about where to purchase sushi ingredients, Asian grocers and fish markets

Helen lived in Japan for over 5 years and learned to make sushi from her Japanese neighbors. She also took a class from Master Sushi Chef Tetsura Abe, a Toyko native, owner of the Ginza in Salt Lake City, Utah. She’s been rolling sushi for 28 years. She’ll show you how they serve restaurant quality sushi at home. Helen prepares sushi for her family on a regular basis and has made it for dinner parties.     This is an excellent class. I have lived in Japan and also traveled there several times but still learned several new things about how to prepare Japanese cuisine, especially sushi. Helen is an excellent instructor and moves along at a good pace, mixing how-to techniques with tips and tricks, as well as background history on the food. She also made sure we would be able to duplicate the dishes on our own at home. I highly recommend this class.

    This class is all about sushi rolls, tasty wonderful rolls that will amaze your friends and family and cement your reputation as the home cook who can prepare anything, including delicious sushi rolls, a miso soup that’s better than what you eat in a restaurant, and sauces that perfectly complement the rolls that you prepare.

    Helen knows her sushi rolls. She’s an engaged and experienced teacher who has lived in Japan. Her class provides hands-on preparation for class members. She provides recipes and extensive information about sourcing ingredients. I think this is a great class.

    I took the beginning class a couple months ago and now this intermediate class last week. Helen is a really great teacher who shares insights and stories that really made the class enjoyable on a social level.
    In this class I learned how to to create many wonderful sushi rolls, sauces, and miso. The hands-on experience was fun and valuable, and we were also given extra info on recipes, ingredients, local markets, the works.
    Don’t forget that this is a tasting class as well! I got to make and eat high-quality sashimi as well as other delicious meats and veggies in the rolls that were all paired with our freshly made sauces.
    I highly recommend this class and I am sure to sign up for the advanced class.
